Wellington, August 15
The invention of Mr A. McKay, Government Geologist, for applying the magnifying power of the telescope to photographic camera, was before the Philosophical Society last night. Mr McKay explained the process aud detailed the experiment he had made, the effect of which was to enable pictures to be taken with great distinctness of objects several miles distant. Sir James Hector, Mr Travers, and others spoke highly of the invention as likely to revolutionise photography, and prove of great value in astronomical research, A patent has been applied for.
The City Council have decided to adopt Messrs Cuthbert and Fergusson's drainage scheme, and to raise a loan of £160,000 for the pnrpose. Of this £11,000 will be paid to general account, being the cost of the sewers already laid, which will form part of the system. The outfall of the drainage is to be directly into the sea at Cook Straits. At a meeting of fruiterers it was determined to form an Association to copo with the Chinese, and to support the Farmers and Fruitgrowers Association which it is proposed to form in this district.

The Bailway League, a l , a meetiug tonight, declined to express an opiuion as to the Midland Railway Company's request for permission to make a deviation at Lake Brunner till more evidence is furnished.
The police are making raids on the bakera for soiling short weight bread, and procuring nominal penalties.
DUNEDIN, August 16,
At a meeting of the Dunedin Typography ioal Association , a letter was received from Mr Millar asking the members to endeavour to the best of their ability to prevent the use of Whitcombe and Tombs' publications in the schools. Tho report from the Committee appointed to interview the printers of the city stated that they had made favourable arrangements re apprentices and girl labour.
