WANGANUI, October 20. Mr W. H. Watt, an old settler here, and formerly M.H.R. tor Wauganui and member of the Provincial Council of Wellington, filed a petition in bankruptcy to-day. He has had heavy losses in land and business speculations.

About 10 p.m. yesterday ihe Birkenhead Ferry steamer ran down a cutter anchored in the harbor. The cutter filled and sank immediately. It is believed there was no one on board.
The Art Exhibition was opened last night at the Art Gallery by E. A. Mnorechin's excellent collection of new worka by local artists embracing a series of illustrations of Domett's " Ranolf and Arnohia."
Mr Durward of Christchurch, in the course of an interview re the Waitoa gold field, expressed the opinion that though the stuff hud bten tampered with the field may still prove payable. A large test will be made with tae tiiliugs plant at the Thames.
Patea, October 20. The Alton (late Woodville) hotel was burned to the ground last night. Nothing was saved, the occupants only managing to escape in their nightclothes. The insurance was £250 on the building in the Standard, and the on stock and furniture, £300 in the Norwich Union.
