A rabbltter named l> I rank Lewis was drowned while crossing the' flooded river at Akitoe in the Wairarap, In conquence of a uisagreenient between the senior and junior Football Clubs a series of resolutions hostile to the latter has been tabled for thr. meeting of the Rugby Union to-morrow night. At the last meeting tho junior dek> gates outvoted the seniors and carried

all before them. An attempt is to be made to obtain a preponderance of voting power in the Union for the senior Clubs, and if not succeesful it will probably lead to a serious split among the Football Clubs. At a meeting of the Central Board of Health this morning 1 it was determined not to take any extra precaution on account of the outbreak of smallpox in Tasmania. New Plymouth, October 5. The Hawea arrived last* night from Manakau with the northern members. A special train left here this morning for Wellington taking the foll6wing members : —Sir F. G. Whitaker, the Hons W. Swanson and P. Dignaa, M.L.O's, Sir Maurice O'Rorke, Messrs Hobbs, Moss, Hamlin, White, Goldie, T. Thompson, Monk, Lawry, Taiwhanga, Fraser, Moat, Withey, Matthewson, R. Thompson, Peacock, Samuel, and Marchant, M.H.R.'s. Invercargill, October 5, McCallum & Co.'s sawmill was destroyed by fire this morning. Nothing was saved, and there was no insurance. It was an old established business, and a number of men are thrown out of work. Lat r. The losa through fire ab McCallum & Cod sawmill is estimated at £2000. The flames had a good hold before being noticed by the nighfc watchmaD, who ran for assistance, bub the fire spread rapidly and the buildings were speedily destroyed, only a small part of the plant being saved. The mill stood outside the town boundary, and as the Fire Brigade have instructions not to attend fireß beyond the boundary the bell waß do^ rung, nor did the Brigade turn out. The members on duty at the station were asked to assist but refused, pleading their instructions. If they had gone the engine could have been worked within the town boundary as only » pnddock intsrvenedjbetween it and the mill aud water wrs plentiful, and a good deal of property would probably have been saved. The Captain of the Brigade states that the Council had previously objected to their attending outside fires. The reason for this is that the suburban boroughs do not contribute to the maintenance of the Brigade. Auckland, October 5. Charles Wilkinson, formerly convicted of larceny at Dunedin, and lately released from Mount Eden gaol for wilful damage of property, was charged at the Police Court to-day with vagrancy and breaking a fanlight at Mr Roker's residence on Saturday last, and sentenced to five months' imprison ment in all, Mr Baddeley, R.M., remarking that the prisoner was a most dangerous man to be at large.
