TOWN EDITION. Nelson Evening Mail. TUESDAY, OCTOBER 4, 1887.

Major Atkinson returned to Wellington by this morning'B steamer. There are all sorts of rumors afloat as to the possible outcome of j his endeavors to form a Ministry, the latest being to the effect that Sir John Hall, Messrs Mitohelßon, Oliver, Qrmond, Beetham, and Soobie Mackenzie will be asked to join him. We are in a position, however, to say that there is no good ground for this or any other report on the subject that hasgot abroad, as op to the present time there is no further develop* ment of the political situation, nothing whatever being decided. Indeed Major Atkinson has not yet actually undertaken the formation of a Ministry. THE first session of the tenth Parliament of New Zealand will be opened on Thursday next by Commission, and ijfc will then be announced on what day the fi speech from tbe throne " will be made. The low rale of admission {one shilling) added to the attractions offered should ensure a crowded audience. With the consent jOqlonel Pitt, the City Rifles intend taking steps to form a Cadet Corp?. A Contributor to the (f. Z.-.'l lines writes:— The city o£ Nelson will ere long be as famous for its activity as for Ub climate. I see the good citizens object to aee so many stones I disfigure their pretty Trafalgar Park. So a working bee is instituted to remove the eyesores. By-and-bye the proud boast of the j citizens will be that their Park will be like their jam — stoneless.
