NEW SOUTH WALES FINANCES.

, I Press Association.] Svdnes, October 7. 1 The Premier made an extra financial statement in the Assembly last night. He stated how the adoption of certain of the Government proposals had affected the revenue for the current year. There was a falling off in the duties on spirits, wines, and tobacco. The i operations of trade had been limited by the i want of money and, worse than that, through the fear that things, though bad, might be worse; the country had been in such a state as he did not recollect seeing it in during the past 22 years. Not :only had there been a falling off in ordinary Customs and in railway receipts, but also in the amount obtained by the land sales. The Government had been also obliged to find work for the unemployed, which of itself showed the great depression of the times. The deficiency was large and might possibly increase, and it mainly resulted from the iuability to sell the land. The probable deficiency 'at the end of the year would be two millions. A good season had arrived, and there was good reason to believe in a return to prosperity. During the recess it would be the duty of the Government to consider seriously the question of retrenchment. j
