NEW SOUTH WALES.

Brann's jewellery shop in George street, Sydney, was broken into and £1000 worth of jewellery stolen. The thieves broke a large plate glass window 10ft by 6ft, and then oleared the window of its contents. No clue has yet been found, but the police attribute the crime to Melbourne swell mobsmen, who are said to have come over for the races. Theodore Horton, Government Land Agent at Goring, for embezzling £2500, was sentenced to seven years imprisonment. The prisoner had held a high position. It was shown that his books had been systematically falsified since 1880, amounts paid by selectors for interest and instalments being wrongly stated. There have been further disorderly scenes in the Assembly. The following dialogue will illustrate the kind of compliments exchanged by members : — Mr Inglis, speaking on. the subject of erecting 1 now public buildings, said : "I will endeavour to refer to these matters in a Parliamentary and gentlemanly manner." Sir P. Jennings : " I hope you will try." Mr Inglis : " I shall try, as my hon, friend, the bull dog opposite, said ; I intend no offence ; if the cap fits I cannot help it," Mr Melville : " There are more ways of fitting caps than one, and you may find itout." Mr Inglis : " Possibly so, when I fall into the hon. gentleman's hands." (Laughter.) Mr Melville ; •• You will probably fall into the hands of another person, and have another cap on, before I get you a black cap." (Mr Melville is an undertaker.)
