PROPHECY BY DR. HOCHSTETTER.
When the eminent geologist, Dr Hochstetter visited New Zealand in the early part of 1859, he made a very careful examination of the Hot Lake district, going from Lake Taupo to Rotomahana, and visiting the wonderful springs at Orakci-horako in his journey. On nearing Tarawera, he camped one afternoon close at the foot of the Paeroa peak, where there are numerous mud volcanoes, and at the top of the mountain a powerful column of steam ascends from the great fountain of Te Kopiha. After examining this region, only a few miles from Tarawera, he proceeds to say, " I am of opinion that this whole portion of the mountain, up to the Te Kopiha fountain — being, as it seems, thoroughly decom posed by hot vapours— will soma lay cause a sudden catastrophe by falling in, and covering the Ratoreka Plain with a flood of hot mud." The natives would not permit him to ascend the Tarawera range, but in face of the present eruption the above prediction is an important one.
