Sydney, Thursday. In the Legislative Council to-day, Sir Patrick Jennings made an announcement respecting the reported French occupation of New Hebrides. In the course of his remarks he stated that the Government of New Seuth Wales had forwarded through the AgentGeneral for the Colony a protest against any abrogation of the treaty between England and France in reference to New Hebrides. The Tariff Bills are being discussed at public meetings called by the supporters of the measure, snd also by those opposing it, Resolutions have been passed for and against the Government tariff proposals at the respective meetings. (Received June 18th, 11.45 a.m ) Melbourne, June 17. An influential deputation of Presbyterian clergy waited to-day upon the Premier to urge the protection of British interests in New Hebrides. In reply to the speakers Mr Gillies said that he concurred heartily in their views, and maintained that England had an equal right with France to hoist her flag at New Hebrides. He promised to immediately represent the views of the deputation to the Governor, aud request His Excellency to ask Admiral Tryon to take steps to prevent interference with the rights and interests of the missionaries in New Hebrides. The Address iv Reply to the Governor's Speech has been voted in Parliament.
