The Trinity Church Sunday-school picnic took place yesterday in Eatwell'a paddock, the use of which was kindly granted for the occasion. There was a very large attendance of young people and others connected with the congregation, and everything passed off successfully. A TELEGRAM from our Reeffcon correspondent, and a graphic account by an eye witness of the Java disturbances in August last will be found on the fourth page. To-morrow, being the anniversary of the settlement of the Province, will be observed as a general holiday, and as such will doubtless, if the very eccentric weather we have of late experienced prove propitious, be largely taken advantage of by pleasure seekers in various parts. The Botanical Reserve, where the Friendly Societies will hold their annual fete, will naturally be the centre of attraction, bufc the facilities for getting into the country afforded by the railway and the easy means of locomotion which are now provided by our livery stable keepers and cabmen will present irresistible attractions to many who prefer this way of spending the day to any other. Bufc whatever form of amusement they may select, given plenty of sunshine, and the people of Nelson may be safely trusted fco enjoy themselves. " A Miner " has favored us with a poem of his own composition entitled " A Voice from the Mines." We do not care to publish it, because its grammatical errors are only equalled by its rhythmical absurd ities, but we will borrow from it one line as embodying our advice to the writer : "* Keep the pick and shovel moving there is a fortune underground." We shall rejoice to hear that the fortune which the pen ■wiil never bring within his reach has been acquired by our correspondent by a diligent use of the tools with which he is more familiar. Posters are displayed on the walls of the town announcing thab the Salvation Army in command of a Captain, a Lieutenant, and a number of " Hallelujah Lads " will open their attack upon Nelson to-morrow in the Army's Barracks, late Temperance Hall. The bills are headed " Salvation Army — Blood and Fire," and the announcement of their proceedings concludes with the feeble joke " C.U.R. there." A MEETING of the Loyal Marine Lodge, 1.0. G.T., for the election of officers and nomination of L.D. will be held this evening.
