NELSON BOARD OF WORKS,

Friday, December 21. Present: Messrs. Burn, chairman, Aitkin, Carter, and Bentley. The minutes of the last meeting were yead and confirmed. The gravelling of the Waimea-road from the Fleece Inn to the tollgate was deferred for a fortnight. It was resolved that the Odd-fellows' Hall should be rated as well as the Temperance Hall and the Young Men's Christian Association Room. It was resolved that the rate for the current year: be Id. in the pound, from August, 1866, to August. 1867. It was resolved that the work should be done, if the inhabitants would contribute two-thirds of the cost. The Assessment Committee reported that the assessment had been made in a satisfactory manner. It was resolved that it be published once in each of the local papers. Messrs. Aiken and others applied to have a cutting made through Bronte-street, near to its junction with Waimea-street. Permission was granted to Mr. M. M. Webster to erect a verandah in Trafalgar-street, similar to that of Mr. Bonnington's. Messrs. Wiison and Richardson applied to have some gravel placed in front of their shop in Bridgestreet. Resolved, that the work be done when the kerbing be completed. , A letter was read from Mr. D. Moore, requesting nlteration of road near his premises. It was resolved, that the work be done as soon as the new rates are got in. Mr. Osman offered to be half the expense of erecting a bridge in Franklyn-street. Resolved, that the Secretary ascertain the cost, and report to the next meeting. : It was resolved that Mr. R. Aitken, sen., be refunded 16s. Bd. the amount of a rate he had paid for property not belonging to him, Mr. Akersten called the attention of the Board of Works to the state of Russell Street, he intimated that a large amount of subscriptions might be derived from the property holders, towards its improvement, and suggested the importance of improving the appearance of a street which was first seen by visitors who landed from the steamers, and who were likely to be disgusted at its present rough state. The Board resolved that the work should be done if the inhabitants would pay one-half of the actual cost. A deputation of Dr. Irvine and Mr. W. Akersten, waited on the Board and submitted the plan of the intended Dry Dock for their inspection, and asked the Board not to claim rates for two years on the property that might be reclaimed and erected. The Board promised to accede to the request of the deputation, in the event of the plan being carried out. The following accounts were passed:—Labor,£3l; Trueman, £7 2s. 6d. The Board adjourned, until the 4th January.
