SCOTCH SONG. Jenny's Complaint to her Sweetheart. My mither's an auld cankry body to me, Deed, 3?obin, hid, seldom she lets me abee; Yestreen, when some lassies were laughing aboot. She, flyting, cried, " Jenny, ye're no to gang oot; Ye hae wark in the hoose, ye bae stockings to darn, An a^ron to mak', and twa mutches to aim; Forbye my auld short-goon is needing a cloot, An' nae guid is gotten in geekin' aboot." Last week young Bob Tamson, that serves wi' John Orr, Cam' doon wi' a rap an' a ring at oor door, My heart in my bosom it lap like a troot, When mither cried, " Jenny, ye maunna gang oot; Ye maunna gang oot, for fu' brawly ye ken. Ye're owre young a lassie to gang wi' the men; There, just Jet him rattle, it's Robin I doot, But were it his betters, je maunna gang oot." I wonner hoo mither gat faither ava, Wad they coort by the fire, before granny an' a'? I daurna speir at her or she wad gang gyte, An' Robin, my truly, she' no sweert to flyte! For if I but look to the door when it's dark Her clavers clean deave me 'boot mindin' my work; I daurna sae muckle's cross owre to the spoot But mither is ragin' at geekin' aboot. So Robin, lad, Robin, I'm wae to declare Ye needna expect me to dance at the fair; Unless ye can get her consent, I can tell As like will my mither dance wi' you hersel', But, Robin, try coaxin', an do what ye can, She dootless has harken'd ere noo to a man; But, guidsake ! be ceevil, an' dinna dispute, Or, sure as ye're leevin', she'll no let me oot.
