The amount of duty which the Government proposes .to raise on spirits manufncn red in the colony, under the Distillation Ordnance, is Bs. a, gallon, being two-thirds of the amount levied on imported spirits. The N.Z S.N" Co.'s s.s. Taranaki is about to take up the trade between Melbourne and Hokitika aud other ports ia ]New Zealand. On Thursday last the Hon. John Hall said ia tho House in reply to Air. Reynolds, that the Government would have no occasion to bring on tbe question raised by the Government, of New South Wales with reference to the Panama Service. The Postmaster General also said that the Government had no intention of opposing the claim of New South Wales that Sydney should be mado the tei-mi-,uus of the line.
