AMERICA.
From the Panama Mercantile Chronicle we learn that a large fire broke out in Portland, Maine, on the 4th of July, and raged for nearly two days. Half the city was destroyed. All the newspaper offices, express offices, banks, and hotels were burued, and 2,000 families were rendered houseless. The loss is estimated as 10,000,000 dollars. The origin of the fire was a little boy, who carelessly let off a cracker among some shavings. It is reported that 2,000 Chilians were landed on the Island of Cuba, and were aidin<r the insurgents. Cuba is- rife for rebellion, requiring only a leader to sever it from Spain. In Mexico the liberal cause seems advancing. Matamoras is occupied by the Juarists. The whole of the north is abandoned to the Imperialists. Gold 149§, and falling. The Fenian excitement has entirely subsided. The prisoners have not yet been disposed of."
