The Melbourne Argus states (hat an ingenious idea which lately occurred to Mr. Ford, has been patented by him and Mr. A. P. Campbell, and has been tested practically at the offices of the Melbourne Gas Company and on the premises of Messrs. Laugvvilf, Craig, and Co., Collins-street. The object is to provide a warm and comfortable fire at a cheap rate, for bedrooms, parlours, and especially offices and chambers, where dust would lie particularly troublesome, and where constant attention, such as a wood or coal tire requires, could not be given. For this purpose a gaspipe, with a few jets, is let into the grate from below and across behind the bars ; a back of firebrick is put in to throw the heat forward, and a sufficient number of comrnoD gaswork clinkers are placed above the jets of gas. When the gas is lighted, the clinkers speedily become red hot, and throw out a body of heat which can be regulated by turning the gas up or down as required. In the ordinary way the clinkers are indestructible, and thus a fire once built can be kept alight continuously if necessary ; and as there is no dust there is no trouble. The t?>?ng is i-eally ingenious, and likely to be useful.
