WEST COAST GOLD-FIELDS.
The body of the unfortunate Mr. Dalton has not yet been recovered, although the beach from Hokitika to the Arahaura, has been carefully watched. The Kanieri Steam Drainage Co. have succeeded in getting to work. The pump will throw up 1000 gallons per minute. The pump is 50 feet long. The W. C. Times entertains the most serious apprehensions for the fate of Mr. J. Dodson, who was last seen on the Arnold, examining its track, and declined to return with a party by a boat to the Grey. A man has been arrested on suspicion of foul play towards the missing gentleman. The Polly, a one-horse ferry boat, has made her trial trip successfully, to Lagoon Town and back again. The local journal has an account of the narrow escape of the steamer Yarra, when crossing the bar on the 6th inst., with passengers from the Rangitoto. A fearful sea washed Mr. Dalton overboard, who had taken a cabin passage iu Sydney, per City of Melbourne, to join the Rangitoto in Melbourne. He was en route for England. The Times adds, 'we only wonder all the deck passengers were not swept away. Mr. 11. W. Bracken, of the Queenstown Hotel, Hokitika, is about to retire from business. His hotel is advertised for sale.
