WELLINGTON. By the courtesy of the steward of the ' Wanganui, s., we have been favored with Wellington papers of the 23rd instant. We extract the following items: — Wellington Races; These races commenced on Thursday. The day was fine, and the Wanganui, s., was laid on for the race-course. The assemblage was numerous, and all passed off remarkably well. The Jockey Club Plate; two heats. Six horses started. The race was won by Mr. C. Fawns g. f. Heather Bell, 4 yrs. ; Mr. H. Harrison's b. c; Warrengate' second. *. The Hutt Park Stakes. Heats, twice round the • course. Three entries.
Amusements of various descriptions were the order of the day, as well as racing. Some earnest seekers after the filthy lucre established a couple of roulette tables 'in the early part of the day, but the police quickly put a stop to this. We only saw one accident to an equestrian, and he was a good many sheets in the wind ; he rode aguinst a horse ridden by a lady. — N. Z. Advertiser, March 23.
