(CONTINUED). KAIAPOI PLUNKET SOCIETY PLAIN AND FANCY DRESS V BALL. A very successful plain and fancy dress dance was held on Thursday evening in the Kaiapoi Borough Hall, which was decorated with streamers and greenery. The arrangements for the dance were in the hands of Mesdames E. J. Corcoran t (convenor), L. J, Parnham, G. Greenwood, R. Wylie, and W. Tourell, who were responsible for the success of the function.

The judges for the fancy dress costumes were Mesdames Maxwell Ram-, say, Miller, and R. J. Smith, and prizes were awarded as follows: — Ladies: Most original, Mrs. E. Clothier (Grandmother); best costume, Miss Ara Tourell (Victorian). Men’s: Most original, W. Gordon (Nigger Minstrel);; best costume, G. Wilson (English Gentleman). A lucky spot competition was won by Miss I. Clothier and J. Braisher. The prizes were presented by Mrs. Hector Mclntosh, and the duties of M.C. carried out by Messrs. R. Wylie and L. J. Parnham. Mrs. Ogilvie’s Orchestra supplied the music, and extras were also played by Miss Clothier.

PLUNKET SOCIETY. MEETING AT SEFTON. The monthly meeting of the Sefton sub-branch of the Plunket Society was held at the home of Mrs. Thorne on Wednesday. The following members of the committee were present: Mesdames Cai’line, James, Quick, Boyce, Ritchie, McGowan, Ditfort, Rollinson, Haigh, and the secretary, Mrs. Roseveare. The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. It was decided to hold a “bring and buy” function on October 19 and also to ask Dr. Birkinsbaw of Ambei’ley to address the gathering. Accounts for 18/- were passed for payment. The hostess lor the day was Mrs. Ditfort, who dispensed tea.

PARTY AT OXFORD, - In honour of the birthday of her daughter Ivy, a surprise party visited the home of Mrs. Gainsford, Main Street, Oxford. Competitions and items were much enjoyed. During the evening Miss Marie Whyte presented Miss Gainsford with a beautiful bouquet. After supper old-time dancing was enjoyed by all. Among those present were Mesdames Gainsford, Whvte, C. DANCE AT KAIAPOI. RACING PIGEON SOCIETY. There was a good attendance of members and their friends at the dance held on Saturday night by the Kaiapoi Racing Pigeon Society. There were several novelty dances, the Monte Carlo one-step being won by Miss D. Morriss and her partner. The music was supplied by Mrs. Ogilvie and Mr. C. Green, extras by Mr. W. Anderson. Messrs. There was a good attendance at the annual dance of the Waikuku Basketball Club held in the Waikuku Public Hall. The committee responsible for the arrangements comprised Misses R. Dymock (secretary), M. Cross (captain), J. Dreaver, E. Loomes, C. Dymock, J. Judson, E. Morriss, B. Maddison, J. Bell, J. Maddison, A. Dymock and E. Dreaver. The music-was supplied by Les. Kinsman’s orchestra (Christchurch). Messrs. J. Wesley and A. Cross were M.C.’s. A statue onestep was won by Mrs. and Mr. D. Morriss and a Monte Carlo dance by Miss Sloane and Mr. R. King. SOCIAL AT COOPER’S CREEK On Saturday night a social was held in the Cooper’s Ci’eek Hall which proved a great success. Music for the dancing Avas supplied by Mrs. R. Southgate. Extras Avere played by Misses Marsh, Clark, and Lilly, Messrs Proffitt and Lilly, the duties of M.C. being carried out by Mr C. BoAvman'. Songs wei’e given by Mr. Ben Ryde (Wellington). A Monte Carlo Avaltz Avas AVon by Miss G. Bonisch and Mr. P. Stevenson. The singing of Auld Lang Syne concluded a very enjoyable evening. PLAY READING. SEFTON W.E.A. Thei’e Avas a good attendance at the meeting of the W.E.A. in Sefton on Monday Avhen a play by Rudolph Besier Avas read: “The Barretts of Wimpole Street.” The leading characters AY’ere taken by Mi’s. F. H. Ford, Mrs. Carline, Mr. 'Thorne, Mr. J. R. C. Mathews and Mrs. Rollinson. The subsidiary characters Avere read by Mrs. Thorne. SOCIAL AT WEST EYRETON, There Avas a good attendance at a social held in the West Eyreton Hall to raise funds for a neAv piano, Cards and dancing formed the evening’s entertainment. Mr. Denis and Mr. Campbell Avere tlie Avinners of a competition and a Monte Carlo dance Avas Avon by Mr. and Mrs. R. Thompson. The music was supplied by Messrs. Elliott and Reid.

METHODIST MISSION WORK Foreign Missionary services were conducted at the Woodend and. Waikuku Methodist Churches on Sunday by the Revs. 0. Burnet and H. Ford, who made special reference to the Solomon Islands missionary work of the New Zealand Church. Then on Tuesday at Woodend, Mr. Hay man, a returned missionary, who has been engaged teaching in the Solomon Islands for about three and a half years, gave an interesting address. Mr. J. T Burnet was chairman. SOCIAL AT KAIAPOI. The members of the Kaiapoi Fire Brigade entertained the ladies who assisted at the annual brigade ball at a social evening in the Oddfellows Hall, Kaiapoi, on Monday, when an enjoyable time was spent in dancing and community singing. Mrs. R. Ogilvie, who was the accompanist, also played for the dancing. Miss E. Rollinson, who has been on an extended visit to Blenheim, has returned to her home in Kaiapoi. Visitors to Cooper's Creek for the Oxford School Diamond Jubilee were Mr. and Mrs. B.
