MASQUERADE BALL.

Ambulance Dance at Kaiapoi There was a good deal of variety at the Masquerade Ball held by the Kaiapoi Division of the St. John Ambulance Brigade at the Orange Hall last Friday. More important, however, is the fact that the function was a complete success financially. The committee had organised so well that everybody present had an enjoyable evening while the Brigade will have a very acceptable contribution to its funds. Most of those present wore fancy dress, including the members of Ogilvie's Dance Orchestra, who appeared as pierrots and pierrettes. The costumes were judged by Mesdames M. H. Aiken, H. R. Aspinall and Miss F. L, Cooper, the awards being as folbws:—Best costumes, Miss Hilda Pollard (Early Victorian), and Mr. R.- Begg (Sheik); most original, Miss Nancy Hunt (Irish Sweepstake), Mr. G. Greenwood (Invalid). Among those; in fancy costumes were: Mesdames Eric Gray (Empress Josephine), E. J. Corcoran (Mrs. 'Awkins), W. Greenwood (Jester), L. L. Wilson (French Art Student), P. Styles. An appropriate diversion during the evening was a mock accident, the victims of which were attended by an “ Awkward Squad ” who contrived to be las awkward as possible. A Monte Carlo dance was won by Mrs. H. Price and Mr. R. Yellowlees. Mr. S. Andrews, of Christchurch, gave four vocal solos during the evening.
