Questions In Parliament

WELLINGTON. Fri. (P.A.).—ln the House of Representatives today Mr J. K. McAlpine (O—Sclwyn) in an urgent question to the Minister of Defence asked if the Minister was aware that surplus ammunition thrown into the sea off Akaroa had been dumped over recognised fishing grounds, and that fishermen had been finding cases entangled in their nets, thus causing both damage and loss of fishing time. If so, what steps would the Minister take to ensure that this occurrence did not recur, asked Mr McAlpinc. Mr Jones said his attention had been drawn to the fact that some ammunition was caught up in fishermen’s nets off Akaroa and inquiries were being made. Instructions issued were that ammunition was to be dumped in at least 200 fathoms of water, Mr Jones said. He sad been told that the ammunition was not in a dangerous condition. Mr J. R. Hanan (O—lnvercargill) gave notice to ask the Minister of Social Security if “in view of the common practice of making increases of awards and salaries retrospective,” the Government, in granting much needed increases ■ in social security benefits, would provide for increased payment to be retrospective to April 1.” FREE ! husbands- & wives GUIDE A fiank and confidential Booklet lot married people (and those about to be married) only.
