'Tongue Happy’ Politicians

AUCKLAND, Wed. (P.A.)—Charges of incompetency by what he described as “tongue-happy” members of Parliament, were refuted by Mr D. W. Rutledge at a meeting of the Education Board today.

Certain people in Hamilton were agitating for the establishment of a South Auckland education board. The majority of school committees, however, were keen to remain under the jurisdiction of the Auckland board, “Mr Kearins, Government member for Waimarino, said in the House last week that he had found difficulty in dealing with the board, yet nobody here remembers having had any dealing withAMr Kearins,” he said. “Such statements by tongue-happy politicians arc doing a lot of harm. “I object to members of Parliament making this board a vehicle for party propaganda. DOING GREAT WORK "This board is doing great work under most difficult circumstances. “Mr Baxter, member for Raglan, was reported as having asked for an assurance that a South Auckland board be established. “I wonder if Mr Baxter can bring any pressure to bear on his Government to release building materials and give manpower. “Some schools in South Auckland were asked recently if they would like to go over to the Taranaki board, but they wished to remain with the Auckland board.” The board decided to publicise the work it was doing in the South Auckland area. It was stated that work valued at £1,000,000 was waiting to be done.
