Marsden s Big Majority In Support Of Proposal
MARSDEN’S vote was overwhelmingly in support of the compulsory training proposal. In a poll in which 66 per cent of the electors used their prerogative the majority in favour of the compttfsory training scheme was nearly six to one over opponents. Maori votes recorded at European booths in the electorate were in favour of the scheme by a majority of more than two
to one. Although the Marsden roll shows a total of 17,051 electors, the effective voting strength after deletions made in compiling supplementary rolls for the gaming and licensing poll as well as the compulsory training poll is 14,385. Of this number 9523, or 66 per cent, went to the poll yesterday. This was a considerable increase in comparison with the number of electors who voted on the gaming and licensing issues in March, when less than 50 per cent of voters exercised their rights. At the general election in 1946, 93 per cent of electors on the roll voted. AT EVERY BOOTH As far as European voting in Marsden was concerned all booths throughout the district registered overwhelming support for the compulsory training scheme. In no instance was the issue close, although in all booths, except two, there was at least one opponent. The exceptions were Matapouri and Pataua. At Matapouri the voting was 31 to nil for the proposal while at Pataua it was 14 to nil. Maori voting was also in favour of the proposal, votes registered at European booths being 175 for to 71 against. Purely Maori booth totals were forwarded to the returning officer at Auckland and were not notified to the Marsden returning officer. At three European booths Maori votes were evenly divided, while at three others:—Otaika, Kamo and Waiotira—the proposal was opposed by majorities, all of which were small. In all other booths Maori voters favouring the proposal were in the majority. although the issue was close at Portland where the heaviest vote at a European booth was recorded, 30 favouring the scheme and 26 opposing it. Details of the voting are:—
Total votes cast. European, 9523; Maori, 216. Effective number on European roll; 14,335.
