Port Of Whangarei 3rd In Number Of Ships
THE port of Whangarei is third in New Zealand in the number of ships entering the harbour. The total of 1016 ships is given in a trade and shipping analysis for 1948 contained in the Abstract of Statistics. Whangarei’s total included four overseas vessels.
Auckland's place as an export harbour was clearly defined in most of the major commodities sent overseas. Goods valued at more than £51.000.000 went through the port, the figure being 35 per gent of the New Zealand total.
While Auckland gained 2.5 per cent on the 1947 export figures. Wellington’s share fell almost the same amount, to 21.9 per cent. Auckland, with 38.8 per cent of the country’s import trade in 1947. lost nearly 2 per cent of this figure last year, and Wellington took the lead with 37.4 per cent. The value of imports at chief ports was: Wellington, £47.940,000,* Auckland, £47,281.000: Lyttelton. £17,400.000: Dunedin. £10,720,000; Bluff. £1,379.000; New Plymouth, £1,205.000. Napier', £852.000. Total Dominion imports amounted to £128.200,000. On the overall total trade of the Dominion, based on value, Auckland had a share of 35.9 per cent, Wellington 29.1 per cent, and Lyttelton 11.8 per cent.
