Whangarei Hockey All o Play Hamilton On Sat.

ONE of the major men’s representative hockey fixtures this year Whangarei v. Hamilton —will take place at Kensington Park next Saturday. .. , An annual event, the match is usually played with Waikato, but since Waikato became a major association it is unable to play matches with sub-associations. . Hamilton is the largest sub-association affiliated to Waikato, and will prove a strong opponent. Last year the fixture was cancelled because oi the tornado which swept the Hamilton and Frankton districts.

In 1947, when Whangarei visited the Waikato, the Northerners won. Hamilton has intimated that it will be sending its two best teams to play in Whangarei. HANNAM, left wing: Also went to Fiji last year ,and has been a Whangarei representative for several seasons. This year he was the only Whangarei player included in the Auckland team which lost to Manawatu. His father, Mr H. Hannam, played against India in 1926. R. MULLINS, inside left: Became the first Whangarei player to gain Auckland provincial honours for 27 years when he toured the North Island in 1947. He was also one of the four Whangarei players who toured Fiji last season. In 1947 he played for Whangarei B at Country Week, and impressed the selectors so much with his stickwork and ball control that he was included in the Auckland team. N.Z. REP. PLAYER R.ROUGIITON, centre forward: The captain of the team, he has an impressive career with provincial, North Island and New Zealand honours. He was a „ New Zealand representative from 1937 to 1948, and toured Australia with the Dominion team in 1937. During the war he was a member of the NZEF team in the Middle East and played in both games against the Indians. He was 17 when he first represented Waikato in 1934. M. JOHNSON, inside right: In the High School XI last year, he has made a good debut in representative hockey this year. He travelled to the Country Week tournament and played against Rodney. C. BINT, right wing: The veteran of the team, he has represented Whangarei for 15 years—since 1934. Last year he went to Fiji with the Auckland provincial team. P. BROWN: A find this year, is the emergency forward.
