Oak Tree Removed For Parking Area

A practical move in the provision of more parking areas in Whangarei was made by the Whangarei Borough Council in Cafier’s Avenue today when a large oak tree was removed from council property adjoining the YWCA.

The tree was pulled down in one operation by the winch on Mr S. G. Bignell’s monster truck Tiny. Manoeuvring the big truck for the pull and adjusting the steel ropes to the tree took most of the time.

Once the oak was pulled down Tiny was brought round into the avenue for the pull in the opposite direction, thus clearing the roots from the ground. By this time the branches had been cut off, and this pull took less than a minute.

Motorists will welcome this extra space in which to park their cars, but not everyone watching the operation was pleased with it. “There goes another old Whangarei landmark,” said one spectator, “It is a shame!”
