Hush Hush Jet Averages 510 mph

LONDON, Mon. (11 a.m.).—Britain’s latest hush hush jet fighter, the Hawker PIO4O, flown by Squadron Leader T. S. Wade, won the British Aircraft Constructors’ Challenge Cup at Birmingham with an average of 510 miles an hour. The Hawker beat two other jets, a Vampire flown by Group Captain John Cunningham (470 miles an hour) and a de Havilland 108 flown by Squadron Leader John Derry at 438 miles an hour.

The jets raced around an 80-mile course which was marked with sodium flares.

Derry was heavily handicapped with his DHIOB tailless experimental aircraft in which he recently burst through the sonic barrier. Wade also received a handicap, but soon overhauled Cunningham. Wade’s fastest lap was at 563.56 miles an hour.
