Guard Pinned Under Truck For H Hours

NAPIER. Tue. (Sp.)—A railway guard was pinned beneath one of five derailed steel trucks of a ballast train for an hour and a half yesterday afternoon.

A collision between the train and a heavily-laden motor lorry at the Ellison Street level crossing caused the derailment.

The guard of the train, Mr Harold Oliver, aged 45, married, of Napier, was pinned with his leg jammed between a wheel of a truck and a heavy post.. Efforts to release Mr Oliver were begun immediately. Jacks and a crane were used to carry the weight of the truck while rescuers dug underneath it and released him.

He was taken to hospital suffering injuries to his head, a hip and a leg.
