Sheep Industry Board Proposal
PALMERSTON N„ Tue. (P.A.).—A conference representative of the Wairarapa, Makara-Hutt, Manawatu, Wellington Central and Wanganui provincial districts of the Federated Farmers, at Palmerston North yesterday, considered the report and recommendations of the Sheep Industry Commission and, with reservations, approved the principle of the formation of a sheep industry board. The conference was not open to the press, but a statement was issued afterward.
On the position of fertilisers, in the light of the need for immediate action to sustain production, particularly on hill country, delegates heard an official report that ample supplies of superphosphate are now available. The conference supported the principle of a standard price on farm, as a valuable contribution toward increased production, and agreed that immediate steps should be taken to implement the principle embodied in the commission’s recommendations.
The delegates agreed with a proposal that land tax be abolished and also agreed with extending deductible allowances under income tax with a recommendation for the inclusion of the expenditure on building workers’ cottages on farms. The commission’s finding on the subject of land values and its expressed opposition to those values being fixed at 1942 prices met with unanimous agreement.
