Run Of Play

After a series of indefinite lineouts. Viljoen sent the ball to Karg, who potted a fine goal from 35 yards out.

This was virtually the only time Rhodesia was in All Black territory in the first half. Conrad made a run from a scrum and sent to Elvidge. who short punted, and Christian bustled- Pretorious into a quick clearance which went out m his own twenty-five.

From the throw-in Viljoen sent the ball back to Pretorious who mis-kick-ed infield, and Scott had a quick po: which grazed outside the post. Simpson. Frazer. Skinner and McHugh were prominent with good work in line-outs and rucks, while Conrad gained useful stretches of ground with well-placed left-footed line-kicks. Easily the best New Zealand movement of this spell followed one of these kicks. Black shot through a gap when van Schoor moved up on Allen. The ball went toAllen, who had Elvidge and Henderson in support as the rush swept toward the sideline in Rhodesia,-' twenty-five. Allen elected to go infield and beat Pretorious with a beautiful sidestep, but Brink came across to dive on him. and a great scoring chance was lost. HIT CROSSBAR Almost from the outset of the second half, the All Blacks were attacking. Black, Elvidge and Henderson combined in a quick rush. Henderson kicking ahead, but Pretorious saved McHugh drove through from a lineout. and Rhodesia was penalised. Scott’s kick from 45 yards out appeared to be going over, but hit the crossbar. 1 There followed a magnificent try by Scott, Simpson won the ball in a line-out and it came back to Conrad, to Black, who went for a gap. He was stopped by a cover defender, but as the ball rolled loose Scott raced up. scooped it up and bluffed the opposition, which moved across in anticipation of his sending the ball on to Elvidge. Scott dummied three defenders and scored. He missed the kick from a comparatively easy position. For the remainder of the game the All Blacks hammered at Rhodesia’s line without success.

Elvidge was nearly through in one of his few runs, and the crowd gasped when the All Blacks cleverly worked a long throw-in. BALL BOUNCED Allen went through but the refer-; ee railed that the ball had not been thrown in straight. Not to be denied, the All Blacks again flung the ball about. Scott came up and sent the ball to Elvidge to Meates, who crossed at the corner, but to the surprise of the crowd, two defenders hit’him and the ball-bounc-ed out of his hands. Scott again came up, shot through, and it looked as though he could beat the only opponent who stood in the road A r -fender threw himself at the ball as it was passed to Henderson and knocked it on to secure a scrum. 'There was still time for the All Blacks to win this amazing game, in which they were doing all the attacking. From a line-out Conrad sent the ball to Black to Allen, whose smart footwork sent him through a gap, but he elected to veer infield with Elvidge and Meates outside him, and was caught. A scrum followed and the ball came to Black, who had Johnstone with him. The Otago forward looked as if he might go over under the bar, but Allen shot up outside him and Johnstone passed, only to sec a defender race back from nowhere and down Allen.
