Powell Shield Retained

Mangonui third-grade Rugby representatives shaded Rodpey in both departments to retain the Powell Shield by six points to nil, on the Kaitaia Oval.

Rodney had beaten Whangarei 14—9, and in view of Whangarei’s strong bid for the trophy the previous Saturday, the visitors were expected to have at least an even chance of taking the shield home. The Mangonui boys proved conclusively that they have settled down to an exceedingly tough combination, and, despite the visitors’ gallant efforts under shocking conditions, never looked like being beaten. Conceding a substantial margin in weight, the Mangonui pack commanded the ball throughout, and the backs gave indication that a higher tally would have resulted on a dry ground. The half-time score was 3—o, but two further possible tries were disallowed because the referee (Mr J. E. Wilkinson) was, not in a favourable position to give a ruling.
