Next Wednesday Will Be Arbor Day
WELLINGTON. Fri. fP.A.).—The Minister of Internal Affairs (Mr Parry) said Arbor Day will be celebrated next Wednesday. August 3, except for areas where local climatic conditions make another day more suitable. The Minister said the need for treeplanting was as great as ever. Most local bodies had, last year, undertaken to arrange for regular observance of Arbor Day on Ihc first Wednesday in August each year. Mr Parry said increased tree-planting was necessary, especially in rural areas, as was emphasised by the Royal Commission on the Sheep Industry in its recent report. Mr Parry stressed the need for selection of suitable trees for the location and for local climatic and soil conditions. and also for adequate after care. Arbor Day could do much to remind the youth of town and country alike of their obligations to plant trees, not only for sound practical reasons but also to preserve and enhance the beauty of their heritage.
