Mr P. G. Ewen, a member of the Whangarei Amateur Athletic and cycling Club, has been graded number five in the 11 nominations made by t.he Auckland centre for a national coaching school to be held by the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association in the Wellington district from August 26 to September 2. The school is being directed by Mr C. L. S. Cross, of the head Office of the Physical Welfare and Recreation Department. who will be assisted by Messrs P. F. Sharpley, R. O. Johnson and J. C. Bcllwood. The school is to be conducted in two parts, each of seven days, the second session being held after the Empire Games in February. It is anticipated that the course will be restricted to 40 coaches, the qualification being that, t.he school is for coaches and not for individual athletes. Mr Ewen has been a member of the Whangarei club since 1945 and has attended two schools at Napier under Mr Sharpley. He coaches club members in discus, javelin, broad and high jumping, hurdles and track running. The club hopes to inaugurate a coaching school in Whangarei for Northland clubs so that Mr Ewen’s experience can be of benefit to amatetur athletes throughout the North.
