Alleged Libel By Mayor, Newspaper
AUCKLAND, Thu, (P.A.)— Letters written by D. M. Robinson,' president of the Auckland and Suburban Drainage League, to Ministers of the Crown and persons in England, formed an important part of the proceedings in the Supreme Court yesterday—the third day of the ease in which Robinson is claiming £SOO damages for alleged libel from each of J. A. C. Allum, Mayor of Auckland and chairman of the Drainage Board, and Wilson and Horton, Ltd., publishers of the New Zealand Herald. Mr Justice Northcroft is presiding, with a special jury. Mr C. P. Richmond, for Wilson and Horton, began his cross-examination of plaintiff during the morning, and Mr Trevor Henry, for Robinson, began his re-examination of witness shortly before the luncheon adjournment. During the afternoon, Mr A. K. North, for Allum, opened for the defence.
Evidence by technical witnesses concerning sewage schemes occupied the: proceedings this morning. Cross-examination was completed of Henry Herbert Watkins, former engineer of the drainage board. The next witness called by the defence was Neville Longbourne Viekerman, harbour board engineer. (Proceeding)
