Hotel Workers Ask Increases In Pay

WELLINGTON. Tue. (P.A.)— Increases in pay and alterations to hours and working conditions were sought by the New Zealand Hotel, Restaurant and Related Trades' Union id claims heard today before the Conciliation Commissioner (Mr S. Ritchie). The union asked that a 40-hour week of five days or eight hours a dayshould not be exceeded without payment of overtime, that broken shifts should be completed within 12 hours from starting to finishing time, and that when a worker is called upon to work on his days off he should be paid a minimum of four hours’ overtime anci receive an extra day off for each dayon which he works. The union also asked that two weeks’ holiday on full pay be allowed all employees on completion of 37 weeks’ service. ABOUT 10/- RISE Wages increases sought were approximately 10/- for each employee permanently employed. A substantial increase in rates for casual labour was also asked for. The union asked that, because of the stated growing tendency to appoint bar managers as distinct from head barmen, their position and wages be clarified and it was proposed that theyreceive £lO a week. , The employers opposed the union’s claims and submitted as counter-pro-posals that the terms and conditions of the present award continue.
