HOUHORA SCHOOL, HOUSES ENDANGERED
KAITAIA, Tue. (Sp.)—Stated to be threatening the Houhora School at Pukenui, a scrub fire almost 30 miles north of Kaitaia this morning was responsible for a call to the Kaitaia Volunteer Fire Brigade.
The alarm was given a short time after 11 a.m. by the school headmaster (Mr J. McQueen) and a brigade detachment, manning the overhead hose layer and trailer pump, was despatched. No information was available as to how close the lire approached the school, but a belt of large pine trees nearby was regarded as a sei ious hazard. . Fanned by a strong north wind, the outbreak spread rapidly when it became out of hand from burning-off operations. In addition to the school, several houses were reported to be in the danger area. Flying sparks from the blaze were also causing concern. A number of settlers was banded together in a fire-fighting force, and telephone information from Motutangi at midday indicated that efforts to control the outbreak were achieving some success.
