far Poison May Ease Cancer Pain
ADELAIDE (By Airmail).—Some cancer patients treated with nitrogen mustard, a chemical developed from the mustard gas used in the First World War, have shown benefit, although successful results have not been obtained in every case, states a report by the Royal Adelaide Hospital, South Australia.
A second shipment of nitrogen mustard has been received by the Adelaide University Anti-Cancer Committee from the American Cancer Society. A previous shipment arrived in January, and was used in Australia for the First time, when 17 patients were treated.. The latest shipment is sufficient to treat about 100 patients. NOT A CURE
The chairman of the Royal Adelaide Hospital cancer clinic, said: “Nitrogen mustard is used in treatment of certain gland disease of a cancerous nature, also blood diseases. “The drug is not a cure.
‘The drug, however, has given some patients quite long periods of apparent freedom from disease. It is administered by injection into the vein.” The chairman added that the drughad to be administered with extreme care, because of its high poisonous nature.—Reuters.
