Notornis is Sanctuary

WELLINGTON. Tue. (P.A.) .—The Minister of Lands (Mr Skinner) said in the House of Representatives last night that a clause was being prepared for inclusion in the Reserves and other Lands Disposal Bill setting aside portion of the Fiordland National Park as a bird sanctuary for the protection of the recently discovered notornis. The proposed sanctuary would embrace more than 400,000 acres extending from a few miles south of the Milford Track to the northern edge of Manapouri. No guns or dogs would be permitted in this area and no persons would be permitted to enter the sanctuary without a permit. There would be substantial penalties for any infringements.
