Communist Immigrants?
WELLINGTON, Tue. (P.A.).—“Passengers who arrived in New Zealand by the Mataroa allege that the draft of immigrants aboard that vessel included a number of avowed Communists, who paraded their Communistic principles and disloyalty to the British Empire by' refusing to stand during the playing of the National Anthem, and by other similar expressions of disloyalty,” said Mr W. S Goosman (O—Fiako) in the House of Representatives yesterday. Mr Goosman gave notice to ask the Minister of Immigration (Mr McLagan) if any steps were taken by those responsible for the selection of immigrants coming to New Zealand tc ensure that no persons would be selected who were avowed Communists oxotherwise associated with disloyal and subvei’sive organisations. Mr Goosman asked that if no such steps had been taken in the past, the Minister would immediately cable those l'esponsible, instructing them tc take evei'y possible precaution to prevent the inclusion in future drafts of such undesirable types of immigrants.
