Suburban Recreation Club Raises £lls

KAITAIA, Tue. FSp.). Recently formed in the Kaitaia districts, a now sports body known as the suburban Recreation Club on Friday raised £lls towards the cost of constructing tennis courts. This result was achieved at a “barterhouse” conducted in the A. and P. Hall, where particularly well-stocked stalls, lunch and afternoon tea service, and other fund-raising activities attracted brisk patronage. Stalls and catering arrangements were on a lavish scale, reflecting the hard and enthusiastic work of a committee headed by Mesdames E. A. Nilsson and R. I. McDonald and under the general supervision of the club president (Mr L. W. Stood). Ladies’ efforts v/ore shown particularly in the clothing stall stocked with garments made for the occasion. Produce, cakes, sweets, ice cream and soft drinks were also sold. The major competition was won by Mr Colin Paulson, with second prize to Miss Eileen Brown, of Rangiahua.

NEW KAIX MOOTED Inspired by the need for additional recreational facilities for young people of the farming and residential community some two or three miles north of Krutaia, the new club is characterised by an energetic spirit of self-help among the residents of the area it will serve. The organisation was born earlier this year when residents combined to raise funds from a series of small social gatherings to build a shelter at Wireless Road for children travelling by school bus. ■ Discussion concerning lack of playing facilities led to the club’s formation with the immediate object of providing two tennis courts which will also be used for basketball in winter. Voluntary working parties have made such good progress that on Saturday preliminary work left the site of the courts ready for levelling and consolidation, prior to sealing.

The club will not stop at provision of tennis courts, and already there is talk of residents building their own hall for community recreation and indoor games.
