Engineers Needed In The Dominion

AUCKLAND, Sat. (Sp.)— Evidence that the ratio of engineers to population in New Zealand is far below that of other countries and is falling further, has been submitted by the Professional Engineers’ Association to the Consultative Committee on the Training of Professional Engineers. The committee, which was set up by the Government, has finished taking evidence and is to report to the Minister of Education (Mr McCombs). According to the Professional Engineer, official journal of the association: “New Zealand is now at a stage in its development when the standard of living will definitely not be maintained for any increase in population unless and until we have adequate professional engineering service.” The journal was quoting the association’s vice-president (Mr F. M. H. Hanson). The desirable ratio of engineers in the community would be 800 per I. of population, said Mr N. C. McLeod, in evidence-. New Zealand’s ratio was now only 610 per 1,000,000. To maintain even the present total, 95 young engineers would have to become qualified each year.
