‘Partially Guilty’ Of Oil Sabotage
BUDAPEST, Fri. (10.30 a.m.)— Dr Simon Papp, chief, geologist of the Hungarian-American Oil Company, pleaded “partially guilty” to charges'’ before the Budapest People's Court of having sabotaged Hungarian oil production, at the orders of the Standard Oil Company, of New Jersey, and its representatives in Hungary. Papp admitted decreasing oil production on American orders. “I was influenced by political considerations,” he said. “I considered the company an American one, and I had been told by my American superiors that it was not in the interests of the United States to back the stabilisation of a country which faces East.
“I am deeply sorry for what I have done.”
Papp and three other company officials were charged with deliberately drilling for oil in areas where they knew there were no deposits, and with suppressing orders for machinery and installations, although the Hungarian Government had made dollars available for the purpose.
