‘Hidden’ Factories For Making Clothes
AUCKLAND, Sat. (P.A.)—Auckland has become a centre for a big “backroom” clothing industry according to some workers.
•They say mushroom organisations hidden from Labour Department officials are being operated very profitably and their products are finding a way to the retail market. These operators are outside the Factories Act and it is difficult for inspectators to pinpoint workrooms. According to the Labour Department report there are 666 licensed clothing out-workers’ establishments in the Dominion, and more than half are in Auckland. “Outwork is practiced on a large scale here and the system is being greatly abused,” said a union official today. , . , , He added that many of these which were apparently unknown to the Labour Department, had extensive business connections.
