Tapu Placed On Fishing At Tutukaka, Taiharuru
A TAPU has been placed on the Tutukaka and Taiharuru fishing grounds, and the areas will be closed for the taking of both scale and shell-fish from today. The closure has been applied by the Ngunguru Tribal Committee in accordance with ancient Maori customs, owing to the presumed death by drowning of Mr Edward Mahanga last week.
A considerable area is affected. From Taiharuru Point, just south of Pataua, across the bay to Ngunguru, is approximately nine miles. The grounds are popular with amateur fishermen from Whangarei and they, as well as local fishermen, will be affected by the tapu. No commercial fishermen operating from Whangarei use the grounds.
-Mr Mahanga has been missing since November 18, when he went fishing in a borrowed dinghy. The upturned dinghy was found on the beach last Sunday. Both the police and Maoris in the district are still conducting the search for the body. The period of the tapu has not yet been decided, but the public will be notified when fishing may be resumed.
