Bowling, Croquet Clubs For Maungakaramea?
THERE is every prospect of a bowling green and croquet lawns being’ laid down at Maungakaramea early in the New Year. More than 40 enthusiasts attended a public meeting lastnight to discuss the possibilities of forming bowling and croquet clubs in the district.
When, he was voted to the chair, Mr T. O’Shea explained that the proposal of forming the clubs had been mooted for some time.
He had inspected the sites suggested and gave his opinion on their suitability. Between £SOO and £6OO would be required during the first year, Mr Arnold said. A good deal of the work would need to be done by voluntary labour.
He outlined the procedure which would be necessary and said that twe sites had been suggested, one behind the public hall and another behind the post office. Mr O’Shea informed the meeting that the Maungakaramea Progressive Society had voted £250 towards the cost of -constructing the lawns should it be decided to proceed with the scheme.
If the district was in favour of the scheme the area could be prepared and play would be possible next November. A canvass is to be made and if 30 members join up within a week, another meeting will be called to form the clubs.
Mr E. Arnold, greens superintendent of the Kensington Bowling Club, addressed the meeting and advised it on the best methods to employ in laying down the lawns.
In thanking Mr Arnold for his interest and practical help Mr O'Shea said that further information would b e obtained regarding the financia l aspect of the scheme before the next meeting.
