Public Service Pay In Samoa Raised

WELLINGTON, Wed. (P.A.).—The Public Service Commission’s approval of substantial salary increases for public servants in Samoa, was announced at a meeting of the national executive committee of the Public Service Association.

The increases are designed to help offset the rising cost of living for both native-born, and New Zealand-recruit-ed staff.

It was stated that while the increases would be received with satisfaction, living costs had continued to rise since the recommendations were made

In four months flour had increased from 7d to 1/- a lb., and bread prices, which were 1/2 for a 21b loaf, had doubled.

It was resolved that the committee be requested to arrange for the collection of cost-of-living data in order that Samoan salaries could readily be adjusted without need for special inouiries.
