Urging Defence Scheme For N.Z.

DUNEDIN, Thu. (P.A.).—Questions of defence were discussed by the Associated Chambers of Commerce conference and two remits were finally embodied in the following amendment which was carried: “That this conference, notwitb standing the uncertainty of possible United Nations Organisation commitments, reaffirms the urgent need for preparation and putting into effect o f a comprehensive scheme of defence for New Zealand, having regal’d to the requirements of each of the three services both as regards training of personnel and provision of equipment. “Further, that until such a scheme is in operation, and while appreciating what the Government has done to encourage air training, the conference recommends that organisation; at present providing facilities for the training of the youth of the country, such as the Sea Cadets, seronoary school cadets, Air Training Corps should be given a greater measure of support,”
