Ho Dote Fixed For R.e-openirig Schools
WELLINGTON, Wed. (P.A.)—“The number of cases of infantile paralysis still occurring in the Auckland district suggest that it may not be possible to reopen schools in the area for some weeks,” said the Minister of Education (Mr McCombs), in answer to an inquiry yesterday afternoon.
When the restrictions were reimposed in Auckland and the Waikato last month, the Minister said -that schools in those districts would not reopen before Easter. Since then cases have continued to occur, with no sign of a decline in the epidemic, and some schools have had to be closed in other isolated districts in the North Island. “What is to be done after Easter depends on the progress of the epidemic and will have to be decided from time to time,” said Mr McCombs yesterday. “The decision on when schools may reopen rests with the Minister of Health (Miss Howard) and adequate notice of the actual opening dates will be given." Miss Howard is at present visiting hospitals and other institutions in Marlborou §h. No further cases, either positive or suspected, have been notified in Northland.
