HOBART FIRE. —Damage estimated

at well over £IOO,OOO was caused by a fire which destroyed the greater part of Ocean Pier at Hobart, and adjacent buildings. It is described as Hobart's worst outbreak. A nearby storage shed, which was completely destroyed, contained apples valued at £50,000 consigned to the British Ministry of Food.

SHIP FOR MlGßANTS.—Following successful trials, the Shaw Savill Line has taken delivery of the liner Monarch of Bermuda for the British Ministry of Transport. The vessel will now undergo full repairs and conversion for the carriage of migrants to Australia. TRAWLER STRANDED.— With the crew lashed to the rigging, the British trawler Epine is stranded on a rock off the Iceland coast. Heavy seas washed overboard and drowned 14 of the crew of 19. The trawler went ashore last night during a 60-mile-an-hour gale. Huge seas swept the bridge away. One man earlier today was washed ashore alive. Four were rescued by breeches buoy on the shore. RUGBY.—In the international Rugby match at Belfast, Ireland defeated Wales by 6 points to 3. Ireland has won its three international matches against Scotland, England and Wales for the first time for- 49 years. ' It defeated Scotland by 6 points to 0 and England by 11 points to 10. BELLONA AT SEA. After four months in dockyard hands while refitting at the Devonport naval base, H.M.N.Z.S. Bellona returned to sea today. The cruiser is to carry out working-up exercises in the Hauraki Gulf .pntil March 24, when she will join the Australian ships H.M.A.S. Australia/and H.M.A.S. Bataan for a day’s operations. She will accompany them to Auckland on the evening of the same day. CYCLING.—The New Zealand Amateur track cycling championships were concluded at the Caledonian ground, Dunedin, on Saturday. Auckland won the championship shield with 22 points, followed by Canterbury, 14, Wellington 9, Otago 6. and West Coast (North Island) 3. BONING.—Dave Sands, the Austra-' liar, middleweight boxing champion, and his manager, Mr T. McGuire, visited Christchurch on Saturday and dis-' cussed with the Christchurch Boxing Association a proposal for an Empire middleweight title bout with BoT Murphy in Christchurch. It is understood that the purse the association is prepared to offer is larger than any yet fought for in New Zealand. The association believes the -New Zealand Boxing Council wtmld not object to a large purse for an#Empire title bout. The New Zealand Council would also have to lift the suspension on Murphy.
