Must Stop Europe Bleeding To Death

LONDON, July 8.
“EUROPE is bleeding to death. It must be stopped and, in stopping it, you have to rule out any prejudices, either religious or ideological,” said the British Foreign Secretary (Mr'Bevin) in a speech today.
He added that there was a very happy prospect of approaching European problems from an economic basis which, if built upon rightly and worked out properly, might yet make the biggest contribution to the unity of European peoples
It would be quite wrong for any European country to start quibbling about Mr Marshall's offer and asking what his exact plan was.
It was obvious that Mr Marshall had not worked it out in detai], but had called upon Europe to do so; “We have decided that we will thke advantage of it. To say now that we are dividing Europe really is nonsense. “What we are seeking is to ask everybody voluntarily to cooperate and tell us what they can produce, what they can put into the pool and how they then can help one another. “I do not know who will stay away, but Britain, having put her hand to the plough, will not turn baek.” Mr Bevin said Britain was going to try to recreate an international brotherhood of Europe, out of which a dominating force, able to triumph over racialism and division, would arise.

"There are historic reasons and other reasons, such as national character, which cause people to think and act as they do.
“You could get upset or belligerent, but immediately you allow that to occupy your mind you have sown the seed in your policy of another struggle. “All you can do is, with patience and deliberation, pursue a sti-aight and correct policy.” Dealing with Far Eastern affairs, Mr Bevin said the peace discussions over Japan were causing Britain to think very hard and very deeply.

The Allies had triumphed over and checked her aggression in a Continent where, living side by side, were Allied people who had an enormous urge for liberty. The British Empire steads ily along under great handicaps since the war ended, but the Empire had great resources. . It was now pursuing a policy of trying to give liberty over as wide an area as possible and develop the great resources of those people, as well as possible.
