Mr A. L. Eccles
The death occurred last Thursday at the Whangarei Hospital of Mr Arthur Leonard Eccles, aged 66. He was a well-known authority on boating and was a partner in the firm of Eccles Brothers, Cameron Street. Mr Eccles was born in Whangarei in 1881 and was educated at the Whangarei and Hora Hora schools. He saw service during the Great War and took part in the occupation of Germany.
Mr Eccles was one of the oldest bicycle riders in Whangarei, and was a member of the first bicycle club. He was also a keen hockey player. Recognised as an authority on boating and yachting. Mr Eccles could identify at a glance all types of marine craft and explain the details of their construction and fittings.
He was the owner of the wellknown launch Jean.
Mr Eccles was secretary of the Whangarei Brass Band for several years. Mr Eccles is survived by his mother, and two brothers, Mr F. M. Eccles and Mr H. S. Eccles. The late Mr C. J. Eccles was another brother.
Miss Nina M. Coates
(Special.) PAFARCA, This Day. The death occurred today of Miss Nina Mabel Coates. Miss Coates, who had been an invalid for a number of years, was a sister of the late Rt. Kon. J. G. Coates, a former Prime Minister of New Zealand, and the late Mr Rodney Coates, for many years chairman of the Ctamatea County Council.
