'Piccadilly Algy' Goes Back To Gaol
LONDON. “Piccadilly Algv,” the eft-convicted confidence rr.an, who once walked into Balmoral Castle declaring lie was a King’s Messenger with a message fni King George V, was in court again recently. He was sentenced tc two years’ gnoJ for having obtained money under false pretences. "Ficcadilly Algy.” alias “Monocled Monty,’’ alias "the Honourable John Rockefeller McCormick,’’ is John Baring Gould, “con man" of international disrepute.
His latest exploit was to persuade a rich young blonde whom he met in a train to give him £3OO to pay their fares to South America. When the woman handed over the cash, Algy vanished. Another pose cf Gould's was that of an American millionaire visiting a Guards Brigade Depot. He would say that he wished to subscribe to the war memorial .and after giving a dinner to the officers he would leave without paying the bill and with the contents of the hotel safe.
